Q: Will you make prints of [x artwork]?

A: Due to the nature of the giclee prints I make, and the process of color testing for accuracy and image quality, I have a limited selection of art pieces I’ll make prints of. I may also cycle out old artwork to replace with newer artwork. I base which prints I release on interest and the general enthusiasm a piece of art receives. I take comments and requests for prints into account, but in the end only a few images will make the cut.

Q: What type of paint do you use?

A: Usually acrylic. I don’t mix in any special mediums or use acrylic gouache or anything fancy. I gesso my surfaces before painting, which can help the paint go on smooth.

Q: What brand of paint do you use?

A: I’ve used a variety of brands of acrylic paint, and don’t have a particular one I like. I go to my local art supply store and pick what’s in my price range and is artist quality. I wouldn’t recommend stressing over paint brands, but rather experimenting and buying within your budget. I know it sounds kind of trite, but practice and skill will always be more valuable than the paint you buy.

Q: What paper/canvas do you use?

A: I like painting on smooth surfaces, like wood panels, boards, or mixed media paper. I don’t have a particular paper I recommend. As long as I prime my surface carefully, and flatten the paper if I need to, I can make most thick papers work for my type of painting.

Q: What do you use for digital art and animation?

A: Photoshop. I wouldn’t recommend it, Adobe is the bane of my existence.

Q: Do you use reference? Where do you find reference?

A: I take photos and videos in my day-to-day life, and I search on google images for specific references (i.e. a particular object or pose) while in the process of planning and sketching for an image. I tend to start with a concept or at least a vibe before seeking reference, but also have folders full of snippets I’ve collected from a lifetime of being on the internet to help generate ideas.

Q: How long did it take you to paint [x artwork]?

A: I try to keep individual artworks to 2-4 work days (16-32 hours). Feel free to ask me about a specific artwork, though I don't often keep close track of the time.
